DIAL Solihull can help disabled people with impaired mobility to find solutions for their mobility issues. Following the introduction of the DDA local authorities and private companies are more aware of mobility and accessibility issues.
Authorities are gradually providing more dropped curbs and tactile and contrast paving to assist people with visual and mobility impairment. Many also provide a service called something like "Ring & Ride" for a door to door local service. Getting around if you have a disability or health problem is no longer quite as difficult as it used to be.
Access to public transport is also improving in accordance with the DDA. Already, you will find in many parts of the country that more and more busses are now wheelchair accessible. New trains and coaches are following suit and Black (Taxi) Cabs are also wheelchair accessible. Airports, too, are now becoming more wheelchair and disability friendly, and extra assistance is often available on request.
There are many ways DIAL Solihull can help you with mobility issues, including:
Disability Benefits
People who are mobility impaired may be entitled to DLA Mobility allowance to help pay for the extra costs of assistance, whether that be from another individual, such as a carer, or from the use of specialised equipment.
Special Aids and Equipment
There are companies who supplying mobility aids and equipment to help people get out and about more easily. All sorts of aids and equipment are available to buy or hire, such as electric scooters, wheelchairs, hoists, stair lifts etc for the more severely impaired, through to wheeled walkers and walking sticks for those less severely impaired.
Motability Scheme
If you’re in receipt of DLA Mobility Allowance at the high rate you might be able to hire or buy a car through the Motability Scheme. The scheme allows customers to pay for a vehicle in installments, often road tax, insurance and maintenance costs are included.
Blue Badge Scheme
Disabled people who are mobility impaired may be eligible for a “Blue Badge” allowing them easier access to parking. Blue Badge claim forms are available from DIAL Solihull and your local authority.
Shopping Trips
Major stores, supermarkets, garden centres etc. often have scooters and wheelchairs available for their customers to use on the premises and in most cities and larger towns there are services called “Shopmobility” or similar. Once registered with such a service you can loan scooters and wheelchairs for a few hours (some will hire wheelchairs and scooters for longer periods).
