Disability & Benefits

Many of our queries concern benefit matters. We can help disabled people, their relatives or carers with all kinds of benefit queries. The benefits we are most often asked for assistance with include:

  • DLA (Disability Living Allowance)

DLA is a benefit that may be available to some one under retirement age who needs help from another person with personal care or mobility

  • AA (Attendance Allowance)

AA is a similar benefit for people over retirement age, but help with mobility needs is disregarded

  • CA (Carers Allowance)

CA is a benefit that may be available to someone who cares for a person who receives the DLA care component at middle or high rate, or AA, and who, therefore, because of their caring role, either cannot work or does not earn more than approximately £90.00 per week.

CA is looked on as a "replacement income" and so conflicts with some other replacement income type benefits and pensions

  • IB (Incapacity Benefit)

IB is soon to be replaced by the Employment and Support Allowance. It is a benefit that may be available if you cannot work due to ill health or disability. Entitlement can not only depend on the inability to work on medical grounds, but also on National Insurance contributions paid. This does not necessarily apply to all applicants, if their inability to work relates to ill health / disability from birth or childhood.

  • IS (Income Support)

IS is the basic income you might be able to receive from the state if you cannot work and have no other or very little income. It can sometimes be paid instead of, or as a top up to Incapacity Benefit, and also as a number of premiums, the entitlement to which is usually triggered by entitlement to other benefits (like DLA).

Note: Income Support conflicts with some other benefits and most other forms of income, including entitlement to a student loan and is means-tested.

In addition to these we are also frequently asked for help with or advice on:

  • Community Grants

  • Budgeting and Crisis Loans

  • Industrial Injuries Benefit

  • Bereavement; funeral cost and health cost benefits

  • Tax Credits and Pension Credit
